[ Or not so gladly. Yata's been thinking about what he said to Weiss since yesterday. Not one of his shining moments. It seems like all he's done is make enemies lately. Is it out of boredom? Frustration? Whatever it is, it doesn't feel right.
It's not like him to hurt anyone on purpose.
Martial arts classes with Lee help him temporarily forget about his worries, but he can't avoid the problem forever. Weiss did tell him to leave her alone, yet it only makes him want to reach out to her more. Yang did tell him to be nice...
Nevertheless, he's stumped on how to approach her. This is on his mind even as takes a break from his class. Maybe he's too parched to think? Just as he leans in for the drinking fountain, he spots a familiar face. ]
Hey! Wei—MMHPFFT!!
[ Water jets into his mouth as tries to speak. He broke the fountain with his own strength. ]
[ like yata, weiss had been busy with her own class at the gym, though rather than be a student, she is an instructor. admittedly, it's not as nice and neat (and dry) as her other job as a waitress, but at least here she isn't being referred to as "excuse me, miss"...
just as she's toweling off her brow after a session, she hears her name... or something like it. she glances to the side just in time to see yata's face get sprayed with a jet stream of water — is that fountain broken?
she spends about five, six seconds watching the man struggle to keep the water from spraying into his mouth and all over his face...
before she sharply about-faces and walks away without a word. ]
[ there is a small, disgruntled sound that may or may not come from the petite girl when he keeps calling her name. it seems a great companion to the annoyed look she gives him when she finally stops walking and turns around. ]
[ He punctuates her curt reply with a bow and a loud, ]
I'm sorry!
[ And the noise around them drops to a silence. Yata can only hear himself catch his breath as he looks at his feet. ]
I'm sorry... I said a lot of things I shouldn't have said and didn't consider your feelings. I was being mean and stupid. I can understand why you're angry.
[ He wonders what kind of face she's making now. Maybe a scowl moments before she lifts her chin and walks away? He's almost afraid to look. ]
So if you want to hit me, it's fine! Hit me with all you got!
[ for a good, long while, weiss doesn' even respond. if he were to glance up at that moment, he'd find her expression relatively calm, almost too perfectly blank.
she's a little struck by the sight in front of her. it isn't so much the fact that he'd sought her out and apologized, but it's the way in which he's apologizing, head bowed, humbled before her. all too reminiscent of the nameless faces in her life, of people cowering before her family name and power.
she suddenly feels a little sick. ]
I didn't mean to call you poor. I just wanted to make sure everyone had fun with the holiday.
[ she hasn't said it, but the apology is there in her tone, quiet and subdued and even a little... ashamed.
there's a strange pause, almost as if she wants to say something else, maybe about all the things he'd said... but in the end she just does as he fears and walks away again. ]
[ Weird. He was expecting at least one haughty slap to the face, but when he hears her footsteps, he figures that there's more to Weiss than what meets the eye. Hell, the same goes for everyone else he's met, doesn't it? Since he's already apologized, he could walk away right now, but leaving things like this doesn't sit well with him either.
As he stands up straight, he calls out to her. ]
Me and Lee are having ramen later.
[ He never asked Lee about that, but he's sure he'd be willing. ]
I just got my bonus, so... You don't haveta if you don't wanna, but...
[ she gets about ten feet away before she stops again, but this time when she turns, it is a slow, careful thing. she eyes him for a moment before her expression flattens into something almost rueful. ]
You don't have to be nice to me just because you're Yang's friend.
Yeah, she told me to be nice to ya, but that's 'cause she knows I'm a fucking prick. [ Ah, language. Yata frowns as he takes a second to gather his thoughts. ] I couldn't do it, anyway. I didn't even try to understand you...
[ He always looked at other people through a filter, picking out both the good and bad he wants to see. It's a quality he knows he has to change. If there's a time for him to start, now is as good as any. ]
I said sorry 'cause I know I hurt you. I'm treating you to lunch 'cause I wanna know you. Ain't got nothing to do with Yang. [ He puffs his chest out proudly and grins. ] I'm HOMRA! I do what I want. Don't worry about it!
[ but. fine. it's not as if weiss has anything else to do later (that's a lie, she always has about a billion things to do — she makes sure of it) and.. admittedly... she can't help but wonder if he's being as genuine as she hopes he's being. ]
[ Her question prompts him to try and raise his defenses up. It's what happens whenever he tries to break someone else's down, but just because it's natural doesn't make it any less embarrassing. ]
Why else would I say something like that, huh? Hurry up and say yes if you wanna. But no pressure or anything, I'm just putting the offer on the table... Whatever...
[ Weiss's answer makes Yata's eyes light up in an instant. He tells her when his classes with Lee end and where they should meet up with such enthusiasm that it's almost as if he was never defensive to begin with. No agendas or ulterior motives here. He's just glad he got a yes. ]
[ Ah, that sounded too eager... He pretends the wall is interesting to look at before he continues. ]
'Cause Lee [ Yata ] will get mad and sad and stuff.
[ Lee doesn't even know this is happening. Looking for a way out, Yata checks his watch. He still has some time before his break ends, but he's also awkward. What do they even talk about after this...? He'll need to ask Lee. ]

But no, Yata's not a quitter. He dries his face with a towel before running after Weiss, calling her name and making a fuss. ]
Weiss! [ He almost bumps into a passerby. ] Sorry— Weiss, wait up!

but it would be too much of a lie to say she wouldn't enjoy having lunch with someone else, rather than always having it alone during her work days...
so she nods faintly, hands folding delicately in front of her. ]
I wouldn't mind it, if neither you nor Lee do.

but weiss is actually glad he's turning away; it makes it easier to hide the little smile lighting up her features.
just when he gets to the end of the hall, she finds herself blurting out: ]
I'm never late!
[ there. now they can both be over-eager losers together. ]
